FAU coach Carl Pelini says the Owls will use a running backs 'by committee' approach this season.

BOCA RATON – Rather than search for a running back to replace FAU's career rushing leader Alfred Morris, the Owls will use a stable of players to get yardage on the ground this season.

FAU isn't necessarily looking for a winner in a running back battle among junior Jonathan Wallace, redshirt sophomore, Damian Fortner, redshirt junior Travis Jones, redshirt sophomore Tony Moore and JUCO transfer Martese Jackson.

“It will be by committee and with the speed of our offense it will have to be by committee,” said Owls coach Carl Pelini. “I want to be deep at that position and we will go as deep at that position as we can.”

Only Fortner, Jones and Moore have carried the ball in a college game – and that was for a combined 62 yards on 15 carries.

Wallace had three touchdowns in FAU's spring game and Jackson has been solid in training camp.

Wednesday's Training Camp Report

  • Making Plays: WR Duron Carter hauled in a long sideline pass from QB Melvin German at the end of the second practice of the day, held at FAU Stadium. Carl Pelini said he had not received any update on either player's eligibility status.
  • Stepping Up: LB Andrae Kirk has been taking snaps ahead of Randell Johnson in the last few practices.
  • Newcomer Watch: S Cre'von Leblanc, a true freshman from Glades Central, has been taking plenty of reps with the starting unit.
  • Instant Message: ““Most of them are battling through. There a couple of guys who could be doing better, but I'm pleased with most of them. ...They are moving a step slower but only because they are exhausted and sore. They are pushing themselves, which is what you like to see.”
