BOCA RATON – Before the sun came up Wednesday, Florida Atlantic players were already on the Tom Oxley Practice Fields ready to get the 2012 training camp underway.
“Today was just like Christmas,” said linebacker Randell Johnson. "We got to put on new jerseys, new cleats. There are new coaches and it is just a new feeling.”
Owls coach Carl Pelini took note of the enthusiasm.
“There is a certain level of intensity that is not there in the spring because now there is a season coming up,” Pelini said.
Pelini also noticed the team has some improving to do before it faces Wagner on Aug. 31, in particular the incoming players were still making adjustments in the first practice.
“They are all lost right now,” Pelini said of the newcomers. “But when they get a practice under their belt and another couple of meetings under their belt, they will come out a lot sharper tomorrow.”
But for the players, the first practice of the camp was a milestone and a sign that preparation for the 2012 season has reached another phase – one with much more urgency,
“We're still trying to get a feel for each other,” Johnson said. “We just have to learn as a team and learn to be a family.'
Hard Knocks at the Ox: Wednesday at training camp
- Making plays: Receiver Paul Moore had some nice grabs on the first day of practice and, now that he is healthy, could be ready to make an impact at the slot receiver position.
- Stepping up: Center Jimmie Colley, who missed most of spring and the end of the 2011 season with injuries, got plenty of reps and could be back ready to contribute.
- Newcomer watch: It's easy to see why tight end Terrell Mitchell was considered one of the Owls' top recruits. The JUCO transfer is much bigger that what FAU fans have seen at tight end and the past, but also has a nice set of hands.
- Instant message: “They worked hard. It was a first day and a little rough around the edges, but we will get it cleaned up.”
