Rewind: Men's sports

We take a sport-by-sport look at how each FAU team fared in 2011-12 by starting with a look at men's sports.

Here’s how each FAU men’s team fared in the 2011-12 season:

Baseball

  • Overall Record: 32-22
  • Sun Belt Conference Record/Standing: 19-8, Won Sun Belt Conference regular-season championship.
  • Owl-Star Performer: Senior second baseman Mike Albaladejo was named to the All-Sun Belt Conference team and the All-Sun Belt Conference Tournament team.
  • Last Word: Despite many injuroes to contributors, FAU narrowly missed making the NCAA Regionals.

Basketball

  • Overall Record: 11-19
  • Sun Belt Conference Record/Standing: 7-9, tied for 4th in SBC East Division..
  • Owl-Star Performer: Senior guard Alex Tucker set the FAU career record for assists, finishing with 538.
  • Last Word: The Owls were thought to be contenders for an NCAA berth, but never got going in a disappointing season.

Cross Country

  • Overall Record: N/A
  • Sun Belt Conference Record/Standing: Finished eighth at Sun Belt meet.
  • Owl-Star Performer: Junior Ryan Davis was FAU’s highest finisher at the Sun Belt meet, coming in 28th with a time of 26:53.5.
  • Last Word: Davis won the Sun Belt Conference’s Sporting Behavior Award.

Football

  • Overall Record: 1-11
  • Sun Belt Conference Record/Standing: 0-8, 9th place.
  • Owl-Star Performer: Running back Alfred Morris finished his career as FAU’s all-time leading rusher with 3,529 yards and was selected by the Redskins in the 6th round of the NFL Draft.
  • Last Word: The FAU season will be remembered for a beginning and an end. The Owls played their first season in FAU Stadium and coach Howard Schnellenberger coached his last game.

Golf

  • Overall Record: N/A
  • Sun Belt Conference Record/Standing: Finished 8th at Sun Belt Tournament.
  • Owl-Star Performer: Clint Wilhelm led the Owls with a 74.81 scoring average.
  • Last Word: Freshman Pablo Gerboles-Parrilla came on strong at the end, finishing one stroke out of the top 10 at the SBC Tournament.

Soccer

  • Overall Record: 5-8-2
  • Mid-American Conference Record/Standing: 0-5-1, 7th in MAC.
  • Owl-Star Performer: Darnell King led the Owls with five goals this season.
  • Last Word: The Owls won four of five matches at one point in the season, but lost six consecutive matches to end the season.

Swimming

  • Overall Record: N/A
  • Sun Belt Conference Record/Standing: 3rd at Sun Belt Conference Meet.
  • Owl-Star Performer: Mikolaj Czarnecki was the SBC champion in the 200-yard butterfly and was also part of the new FAU record-setting 400-yard freestyle relay squad.
  • Last Word: Freshman Ty Lapinski is one of the top returners for the Owls.

Tennis

  • Overall Record: 13-9
  • Sun Belt Conference Record/Standing: No. 5 in Sun Belt seedings, lost in first round of Sun Belt Championships
  • Owl-Star Performer: Junior Taylor Albrecht finished 18-1 at No. 1 singles this season
  • Last Word: The doubles team of Albrecht and freshman Will Neuner was named All-Sun Belt Conference
